Day Island is the waterfront neighborhood at the north end of University Place’s Puget Sound shoreline. A house here may keep ice where people sit outside, and an outdoor ice machine lives by different rules.
Before you call, look at two things: the name on your water bill and where the machine stands. Between them they decide the order of the checks below.
What we see here
- Sub-Zero makes undercounter ice makers rated for outdoor use, and the installation guide for one of them, the UC-15I(P)O, requires a GFCI outlet when it goes outside.
- Only a model rated for outdoor use belongs on a deck, so the model number comes before any other question about an outdoor machine.
- The bin of an undercounter ice machine is not refrigerated, and Sub-Zero advises keeping the machine out of direct sun and high heat; a south-facing deck in July tests both.
- A tripped GFCI leaves an outdoor machine dark and silent, which looks like a breakdown until the outlet is reset.
On your side of the Shut-Off Line
- Press the reset button on the outdoor GFCI outlet if the machine is dark; if it trips again, leave it off and call.
- Read the model number off an outdoor machine and check that Sub-Zero rates that model for outdoor use.
- Note how much afternoon sun reaches the machine; the bin has no cooling of its own, so a low bin on a hot day may be melt.
- Look along the drain line you can see, without moving the machine, for a kink or a loop.
